To the south of the city of Wolverhampton is the wide expanse of Penn Common which was used to stage a series of races throughout the 19th century.  Entries were made at the Fox and Goose pub for all meetings. A meeting in 1822 was organised by the Himley & Enville Yeomanry Cavalry and the feature race was won by Mr Aston. Racing ceased in the early 1890s when a portion of the ground was used to develop Penn Golf Club, although there is still some evidence of the previous existence of the old racecourse.
